Varithena Sclerotherapy

What Is Varithena®?

Varithena® is an FDA-approved, minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins that uses a specialized microfoam to close diseased veins.

The foam is injected directly into the affected vein, where it displaces blood and causes the vein to collapse and seal shut. Blood is then redirected to healthier veins.

What Preparation Is Required?

Preparation is minimal. You may be advised to:

  • Avoid lotions or oils on your legs
  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Stay hydrated and eat a light meal beforehand

Your provider will give you personalized instructions prior to treatment.

Can I Take My Current Medications?

Most medications can be continued. Inform your provider if you are taking blood thinners or other medications that may affect treatment.

What Happens During Varithena® Treatment?

During the procedure, a small amount of Varithena® foam is injected into the targeted vein using ultrasound guidance.

The foam works quickly to close the vein. The procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes and does not require incisions or general anesthesia.

What If the Treatment Is Successful?

Once the vein is closed, blood flow is naturally redirected. Over time, the body absorbs the treated vein, leading to improved circulation and reduced symptoms such as swelling, heaviness, and visible veins.

What Happens After the Procedure?

After treatment:

  • You will be encouraged to walk and stay active
  • Compression stockings may be recommended
  • Most patients return to normal activities the same day

Some mild swelling or tenderness may occur but usually resolves quickly.

if they need to travel for more than 2 hours at a time during the week after your procedure they should let the doctor know. There may be special instructions depending on their circumstances.

What Are the Possible Complications?

Varithena® is generally very safe. Rare side effects may include:

  • Mild pain or swelling
  • Injection site reactions
  • Headache
  • Blood clots (rare)

Contact your provider if you experience unusual swelling, pain, or shortness of breath.
